Description

Climate change is a substantial variation in global or regional climate patterns including average temperature, precipitation and wind. The term has been more widely used with change of temperature over past century as compared to variation in precipitation and wind. Man-made activities are largely responsible for climate change all over the globe. Unfortunately the change is more rapid and dangerous than earlier estimations. One might say that this whole world is now one vast uncontrolled experiment. The global mean temperature has risen by 0.7°C in last century leading to dire consequences in the form of heat waves, shrinking of glaciers, drop in average rainfall and a lot more. Further temperature rise may result in irreversible impacts on our ecosystems and food and water supply. Sustainable development is a holistic approach that meets the needs of present generations within the carrying capacity of supporting ecosystem. This way development can be sustained for generations. The requisite sustainable technologies able to reduce climate change parameters upto 80% over a period of century are now available. There is a pressing need to apply these technologies across different sectors of economy right from resource extraction, processing, packaging, post-production to the generation, disposal and recycling of wastes. This volume presents a rich collection of articles on causes and impacts of climate change on our ecosystem along with practically approachable sustainable technological solutions to mitigate the climate change problems. An outline of the articles covered in this volume is as under: o Climate change and sustainability technology o Climatic impacts of aerosols o Catalytic conversion of greenhouse gases to control global warming o Remote sensing for environment and climate diagnostics o Analysis of aridity in relation to climate and sustainability of cotton production in India o Climate change cause, impact, management and agricultural sustainability o Sustainability indicators of the emergent agronomic practices from Indian perspective o Advances in production of GM crops in context of climate change o Land use change and climate change impacts in various agro-ecological settings in western Ghats and coastal plains of south India o Toward a conceptual framework of forming psychological safety climate in construction o Moisture conservation practices for mitigating soil water stress under changing climate o Oleaginous microorganisms for biofuel development o Microalgal culture as a sustainable technology for management of CO2 emissions o Climate change impact on water resources of India o Climate change and global water crisis The present volume is comprised of 15 articles contributed by 33 academicians and active researchers from 4 countries, namely Hong Kong, India, Portugal and United States of America presenting an overview of the ongoing activities in the area of Climate Change and Sustainable Technology.
